There are many factors to consider when constructing a pond. There are too many to list, but here are a few main points to consider if you have the area for a pond.
1. Check with your local agencies first. They may have restrictions and permits needed before construction.
2. The pond depth should be a minimum of 8 feet with banks sloping not greater than 30 degrees.
3. If you need to line your pond to hold water, clay is your best liner.
4. Never dig your pond wet. Keep it pumped dry during construction.
5. Keep foliage far off of the banks, and trees 40 feet from the water’s edge. (No willow trees)
6. There are many different species of aquatic plants that are beneficial to the pond; not only for aquatic health and ecology, but also for bank stabilization.
